at Nickerson St. Zendo, (101 Nickerson Street, Suite 130, Seattle, WA, 98109)
After zazen this Sunday, we will offer a special event for the whole family. First, a story for the children related to our theme of spirit settling. Then, in the ceremony, we call forth the many restless spirits of our world and offer them recognition and nourishment. In order to entice the spirits to make an appearance, we need help from everyone.
Please bring family members young and old, nourishing food and sweets for the altar, and plenty of creepy fall decorations. Noisemakers boost the energy, the more cacophonous the better--horns, pots and pans, anything will do. Costumes and masks help the spirits feel more at home and among their own kind.
You are encouraged to come early before zazen to help decorate the altar and zendo. We'll begin the decorating at about 8:30.
This ceremony is modeled on a traditional Buddhist ceremony called segaki or sejiki. It is not only about offering nourishment and compassion for the hungry ghosts, those beings tormented by insatiable desire, but also about acknowledging our own shadow side, the parts of us we choose not to recognize and relegate to the darkness.
Afterwards we will enjoy whatever goodies the spirits leave behind.
As always, newcomers are welcome. If you are a first time participant, please try to arrive by 9:10 so we can show you around a bit.
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. We supply cushions, kneeling benches and chairs. Please be at your seat by 9:25 a.m. There is no charge for sittings. We welcome your donation.
