Our Zen practice can heighten our attentiveness to interconnection though we frequently experience ourselves as separate. Given the human condition generally and the circumstances of the contemporary world, we might find ourselves going numb or distracting ourselves from genuine interaction. In this class we’ll consider whether cultivating empathy might guide us in unburdening our responsiveness to our situation and to one another, and how empathy might be linked to compassion.
In the class a description of conceptions of empathy in contemporary culture will lead to shared inquiry into concepts of empathy through presentations, discussions and activities involving careful listening, sharing experiences, sharing poetry and stories, and listening to music.
