Ewan Magie

Chikyo Ewan Magie has practiced Zen since 2008, and specifically with Eko Jeff Kelley and Seattle Soto Zen since 2010. He began meditation practice with Rodney Smith at Seattle Insight Meditation Society (SIMS) in the 2000s, taking the Introductory course and beginning a long practice of sitting residential retreats. Since 2010 he has focused on Soto Zen in particular, sitting sesshins at many local sanghas, including Mountain Rain Zen, Red Cedar Zen, Great Vow Monastery, and Dharma Gate. He has led Mountain Meditation Hikes for Seattle Soto Zen since 2010. In Fall 2015, he attended Green Gulch Zen Farm for their residential practice period led by Tenshin Reb Anderson and Fu Schroeder. In Winter 2017, with the help of Seattle Soto Zen, he attended the residential 90-day Ango at Tassajara Zen Mountain Monastery led by Abbot Ed Sattizahn. He has served on the SSZ Executive Board since 2010, and the Practice Council since 2016. For two years, he served as Ino for Seattle Soto Zen, both in the zendo and on residential retreats. One of Seattle Soto Zen’s senior practitioners, he serves the sangha as Service Position Trainer. With his teacher Eko Jeff Kelley, he has been training to become a Soto Zen Priest since 2014. A lifelong lover of literature and culture, he teaches English at local junior colleges
