Shukke Tokudo

Shukke Tokudo means “Leaving Home, Attaining the Way.” This is an ancient ceremony of ordination in Buddhism where one leaves one’s home and family behind to begin the training and practice of an “apprentice”. Today in the west the practice looks different – though we receive the same precepts, we can have a partner and family, and often priests work and live in the community rather than a monastery. The ceremony continues to signify a commitment to dharma practice, and to the vows we take as the guiding principles in one’s life.

You are warmly invited to attend this ceremony for Daikan John Green. The preceptor for the ordination will be Shinmon Michael Newton, co-guiding teacher of Mountain Rain Zen Community, Vancouver, BC.

When: 7 pm, 26 June 2022 (Sunday) Please arrive by 6:30 pm such that the onsite rapid Covid test can be performed. A rapid Covid test on Saturday is also required. Please register for this event on the Red Cedar Zen Community website, even if planning to attend via Zoom.

Where: Samish Island Campground and Retreat Center, 11633 Scott Rd, Bow, WA 98232; phone: (360) 766-8125

One does not need to attend the weeklong sesshin to attend the ceremony, however, please be mindful of those at the retreat center, as they are near the end of their eight-day silent retreat. Please observe silence and social distance.
